If you guessed the “psoas”, you guessed correctly!

The psoas muscle (pronounced so-az), or often called “the mighty psoas” or “the dancer’s muscle”, is the only muscle in the human body connecting the upper body to the lower body.

The muscle attaches to the vertebrae of the lower spine, moves through the pelvis and connects to a tendon at the top of the femur. It also attaches to the diaphragm, so it’s connected to your breathing, and upon it, sits all the major organs.

The psoas and surrounding muscles has a profound influence on alignment of the pelvis. Because of this, it has a great affect on posture and coordination in dance. A dancer that moves smoothly and efficiently is utilizing the strength and stability of their core (center), of which the psoas is an essential component.

When you find yourself admiring the smooth elegance of a talented dancer, you’re looking at someone whose psoas muscles are functioning at their fullest potential.

Let’s get something straight, through. The psoas play an important role in a few crucial components of dance. While increasing your awareness, understanding, and proper use of these muscles can have enormous benefits, you need to learn how to exercise it and keep it healthy so you can unlock its full potential.

What if you have a weak psoas?

When the psoas become stuck in an over-contracted state, it becomes weak and tight, and unable to lengthen properly. The result is that other muscles compensate for this weakness further creating other imbalances in your body.

Compensation usually occurs in lower back pain and other injuries.

That’s why it’s important for you to work on flexibility, but also on strengthening the psoas and surrounding muscles!

When the psoas functions well, it has the power to...

… smooth your movements and lines as you dance.

… help you achieve peak performance day after day after day.

… rapidly drop ugly body fat that stubbornly clings to your body.

… train harder, heavier and gain strength faster than you thought possible.

… enhance sexual activity.

… flood your mind and body with renewed energy and vigor.
