D. The Masseter

If you guessed the “psoas”, you guessed correctly!

The psoas muscle (pronounced so-az), or often called “the mighty psoas” or “the dancer’s muscle”, is the only muscle in the human body connecting the upper body to the lower body.

The muscle attaches to the vertebrae of the lower spine, moves through the pelvis and connects to a tendon at the top of the femur. It also attaches to the diaphragm, so it’s connected to your breathing, and upon it, sits all the major organs.

The psoas (and surrounding muscles) has a profound influence on alignment of the pelvis. Because of this, it has a great affect on posture. The imbalance of the psoas effect on the lower back is direct and immediate, either pulling the lower back into lordosis, a deeper inward curve, or the opposite, pulling the lower back flat.

Tightness or imbalance of the psoas is known to cause difficulty focusing, irritability, sadness, anger, problems falling asleep, digestive issues, fatigue, stress.

Our entire body is connected, from the brain to the muscles. If the psoas is constantly tight and overworked, the body will be in a constant emotional and physical stress, with the brain constantly sending warning signals to the entire body, including the reproductive system which, you guessed it, affects our sexual performance.

These signals trigger responses that cause overexertion of the suprarenal glands (which regulate your immune system, blood pressure, metabolism and response to stress) and will weaken the body’s natural immune response to stress.

What if you have an imbalanced psoas?

When the psoas become stuck in an over-contracted state, it becomes weak and tight, and unable to lengthen properly. The result is that other muscles compensate for this weakness further creating other imbalances in your body. Compensation usually occurs in lower back pain and other injuries.

Stress and Sex DO NOT go together

If you think about the relationship of sex and your hips; the hips are the primary movers in sex and it’s somewhat common sense that we want our hips to be loose and flexible in order to achieve great dynamic sex.

So what does this mean for your intimate life? If you sit all day and aren’t doing the appropriate work needed to fix your hips, ensuring that your muscles that support pelvis movement are working as expected, you can be sure you are not tapping into your peak sexual-health.

It’s amazing just how something we never think about can have such a big impact on our life!

Look at the photo below!

You have by now understood why this muscle is called “the mighty-psoas”

It’s often thought that a protruding belly posture (potbelly) may be fixed by pulling the belly in, thus strengthening the abdominals, but as we have learned, this is yet another cause by an imbalanced tight psoas muscle.

The tight psoas muscles, which lie behind the contents of the abdomen pull the spine forward and pull the pelvis into an anterior tilt (top of the pelvis rotates forward). They will also push the abdominal contents forward, creating the appearance of a protruded belly.

Just like a potbelly posture, the psoas can be responsible for all other postures depicted above, including the proper posture, which portrays you as a completely different and confident person.

... and POSTURE influences everything in our life!

Posture affects all aspects of our life. People with rounded shoulders, hunched backs, and necks that force their gaze towards the floor, generally do worse at interviews and are perceived as less attractive than their counterpart with good posture.

When the psoas functions well, it has the power to...

… help you achieve peak performance day after day after day.

… rapidly drop ugly body fat that stubbornly clings to your body.

… train harder, heavier and gain strength faster than you thought possible.

… enhance sexual activity.

… smooth your movements and lines as you dance.

… flood your mind and body with renewed energy and vigor.
